This August 1 marks Canada's first official, nationally-recognized Emancipation Day. Today we reflect on the dark history of slavery in Canada, honour people of African descent for their courage and resilience in their pursuit of freedom, and renew our commitment to social justice and to fight all forms of racism and hate.
