I am truly horrified by the senseless act of hatred in London, Ontario that targeted a Muslim family, killing 4 and seriously injuring a young child. Islamophobia has no place in Canada, we must remain diligent to stop it. To all those affected by this tragedy—family, friends, the Muslim community in London and across Canada—you are not alone. We stand with you.
No Muslim should ever feel fear to leave their homes, certainly much less when they are together with their family. My community is mourning the murder of members of the Afzaal family in the terrorist attack, targeted simply for being Muslim. While messages of solidarity and support continue to pour in for the Muslim community in London and across Canada, we must not lose sight of the fact that hate and Islamophobia are real in Canada and must be confronted.
Our government is committed to addressing the growth of online hate and discrimination, and will continue to work to displace hate-motivated acts both online and at a community level.
