Investments in clean transit projects supports our post-pandemic recovery, makes life more affordable and helps us build towards a net-zero future. The purchase of 5,000 zero-emission buses over the next 5 years - part of our 8-year, $14.9 Billion transit plan - is a step towards creating a more resilient and sustainable Canada for future generations.
On Friday, March 5, 2021, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catherine McKenna joined the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne to announce that, starting in 2021, $2.75 billion in funding over five years will go to enhance public transit systems across Canada. The funding will help transit systems switch to cleaner electrical power, which includes the purchase of zero-emission public transit and school buses.
Infrastructure Canada’s funding programs have supported the purchase of over 300 new zero-emission buses to date. This announcement is another step forward for smart public transit funding that creates good jobs and a cleaner environment, and helps to improve the quality of life in our communities by making them more inclusive and accessible to everyone.
