Since the beginning of this crisis we have strongly advised against non-essential travel and put in place measures to protect Canadians from COVID-19. With less than 2 per cent of COVID-19 cases linked to returning Canadians, our travel measures are working. With the emergence of new variants, we are strengthening our borders and placing more limits on non-essential travel to protect the health and safety of Canadians.

Here is a list of some of the new travel measures being enacted for those who make non-essential travel:

• Working with Canada's major airlines to suspend air services to sun destinations - such as the Caribbean and Mexico - until April 30
• At an expense of up to $2,000, returning travellers will be required to wait up to three days at an approved hotel while they await their test results
• Strengthened requirements for entry at the land border with the U.S. - which includes producing a negative test before entry
